MERCY KENNEDY FLUNK: Mercy is a transplanted Texan leading a life of academic and domestic drudgery: as an assistant professor in a less than mediocre university, caught in a less than mediocre marriage. Copper-haired and buxom, she sees herself as drab and drained, and rationalizes her inability to change her situation with the universal excuse, "For the children's sake." Her husband is George Flunk III, a vacuum cleaner repairman who looks on life and his wife with cynical superiority.
